Ensuring News APIs Performed Flawlessly Across Global Syndication at BBC
The Challenge
The BBC's news APIs power syndication across dozens of global media channels. When a breaking news story goes out, every API endpoint must respond correctly and at speed — a failure means stories go missing, malformed, or delayed across partner networks. The challenge was building confidence that the APIs would perform under real-world syndication load, handle edge cases gracefully, and return consistent, correctly structured data across every consumer format.
Our Approach
Our engineer conducted a thorough API testing engagement covering functional correctness, data schema validation, error handling, and load behaviour. Test suites were written to verify each endpoint against its consumer contracts, covering happy paths, edge cases (empty results, large payloads, unexpected query parameters), and failure modes. Load scenarios were run to simulate peak syndication demand — the volume of traffic triggered by a major breaking news event.
The Outcome
Comprehensive API test coverage was established for the core syndication endpoints. Critical edge-case failures were identified and reported before they could reach production. The final test suite gave the engineering team a reliable regression baseline they could run before every release, significantly reducing the risk of syndication failures.
